When it comes to hair treatment, a lot of people I have spoken to often think that you have to spend £££'s to be able to have constant healthy hair. In reality you hold everything to great soft, silky, shiny and healthy hair already in your home.....and it's all in your kitchen!
Being Turkish I have been blessed with thick hair that comes from being Mediterranean. I have always had people commenting on my hair and always asking how I keep it healthy whilst having it so long. My answer is simple, feed it with good food!
Eating healthy is without a doubt good for you in many ways, but when I say feed you hair, I mean literally put the food in your hair! Carry on reading to see why I use these foods in my hair and my homemade hair mask recipe

For hundreds of years, Turkish women have fed their hair and skin with olive oil! Olive oil is popular for its rich source of anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids that nourish not only the hair but your skin also. Olive oil has healing powers, it is used for hair loss, hair strengthening and getting rid of dandruff.

Like olive oil, bananas help control dandruff and hair loss. Bananas are packed with potassium, natural oils, vitamins and carbohydrates which all help with softening your hair, nourishing your scalp and helping maintain your hairs natural elasticity.

Honey has been used from the beginning of time for medicine, skin and hair! It has amazing healing properties and is packed with vitamins, minerals. It is an emollient (softens and smoothes), humectant (attracts moisture) and its anti-bacterial and anti-oxidant nature can help keep your scalp healthy giving you that lustrous, shiny and clean look.

Contrary to the belief that lemons will dry your hair out, it actually helps strip your hair of all the unnecessary build up of dirt and chemicals left in your hair from day to day life, shampoos and styling products. Lemons are a great and natural way to lighten your hair also. Lemons are acidic so I don't recommend applying it directly to the hair as it is but mixing with other ingredients or even just water will suffice.
My Homemade Hair Mask
Preparation Time: 15mins
Duration in Hair: 15-45mins
1 Banana (preferably a soft one)
1 Slice of Lemon
2 Teaspoons of Honey
2/3 Eggs (1/2 If you have short-medium hair)
7/8 Spoonfuls or Half a Cup of Olive Oil
7/8 Spoonfuls or Half a Cup of Milk
1 Small Glass Bowl
1 Sieve
1 Whisk
1 Old Towel
Step 1: Pour your eggs, milk and olive oil into the glass bowl and gently whisk together.
Step 2: Chop the banana into pieces and place on sieve over the small bowl. You must make sure to puree the banana as you don't want it in chunks because getting it out of your hair will be a nightmare! Using a fork or a spoon, gently start mushing the banana. To make things slightly easier you can add a spoonful of water on top of the banana just to help get all the juices out.
Step 3: Add the honey and squeeze a few drops of lemon into the mixture and whisk thoroughly.
Whisk until it turns a pale yellow colour |
Step 4: Place the old towel around your neck and shoulders as things could get a little messy. Ideally in the shower or bathtub, start working the mask into your hair from your roots. Massage it into the scalp and slowly begin to run your fingers through to your ends. Once your entire scalp is covered, you might want to take a comb and start running it through your hair.
Step 5: After you have covered your entire hair with this mask, slowly bring it up into a bun and hold with a hair clip, or you can wrap your head with cling film (this is a more guaranteed way of keeping the juices of the mask in one place)
Step 6: Leave on between 15-45mins. I usually leave it for 45mins. The main thing here is to not let it dry on your hair. The olive oil in the mask stops your hair from drying out so I leave it on for as long as possible so my scalp can soak up all the good stuff. If you are in a rush then 15mins is absolutely fine too!
Step 7: This is the crucial part! When removing the mask, DO NOT use water straight away. As you can guess water and oil doesn't really mix well together so grabbing your favourite shampoo (in my case its Johnsons Baby Shampoo as it doesn't contain all the harsh chemicals other regular shampoos have) work it into your hair! You want to be very generous here with the shampoo, massaging it in your roots especially making sure the oil doesn't stick to your hair. Once you are satisfied that your entire head is covered in shampoo, then you can go ahead and rinse it all away. Apply shampoo one more time and then use your conditioner on the ends of your hair.
Step 8: Let your hair dry and style how you wish. You will notice that your hair is softer, shinier and feels stronger!
